Somerset East Care and Cure unit is situated in Somerset East, in the heart of the Eastern Cape.
This visionary health care centre is the realisation of a healthcare vision of local GP, Dr. Janita Saayman.
Our facility exists, because there is a huge need for a local option for patients who are in need of nursing care, oxygen, IV therapy and medical observation after medical procedures.
As a step-down facility we cater for patients that need to recover from surgery, rehabilitation after a hospital admission as well as palliative care.
Our patients include the frail and elderly and also patients of all ages with respiratory infections, patients who need supportive oxygen or rehydration for Gastro-Enteritis, or treatment for uncontrolled Diabetes and Hypertension.
We also provide close control and monitoring of cancer patients recovering from chemo or radiation treatment as well as patients in need palliative care.
Our highly qualified staff include 7 carers, 4 Nursing Sisters and 2 Staff sisters. Together they provide top quality medical care in our 6 bedroom facility, which includes 1 paediatric bed and 5 adult beds.
Each room provides an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity, allowing our patients to recover holistically and in peace.
We are registered with all medical aids, making it the perfect choice to recover close to your loved ones in Somerset East.

Hy is gediagnoseer met regter long infeksie.
Daardie versorgers was wonderlik.
Dr Janita se Care & Cure unit was so skoon.
Terug huis toe. Maar daardie nag niks geslaap. Sy rug was so seer.
Dié keer met my motor.
Julle is tops. En boonop is julle geregistreer by mediese fondse.
Dankie dat ek die hele dag langs my man se bed kon wees.
Dear Dr. Saayman And Staff at Somerset Care Cure Unit at Huis Silver Jare. I am writing to extend my deepest gratitude to you and your team for the exceptional care and compassion you provided to my aunt, Verity Pienaar during her final days. Your support and kindness brought immense comfort to her and to our entire family during such a difficult time.
The professionalism, empathy, and dedication shown by everyone at Somerset Care Cure Unit were truly remarkable. From the attentive doctors and nurses to the supportive staff, every interaction was marked by a genuine concern for my aunt’s well-being and dignity. We are especially thankful for the efforts that were above and beyond to ensure my aunt was comfortable and cared for with the utmost respect.
Your ability to combine medical expertise with heartfelt compassion provided us with much-needed solace and reassurance. Please know that your hard work and kindness made a significant difference to us, and we will always remember the positive impact you had on my aunt’s final days.
We recently received excellent service at the Somerset East Care & Cure Unit hospital after my Dad was admitted after having a stroke.
Dr Janita Saayman discussed my dad’s health situation and made us aware that his condition has reached a critical stage. The medical team was doing everything they could to provide the best care and support that my dad needed. They monitored his condition closely and kept us updated during the critical stages. He made a remarkable recovery and literally walked out of hospital a week later!
Dr. Janita Saayman’s expertise and knowledge with elderly people is evident. She took the time to listen to our concerns and thoroughly explained his diagnosis and treatment options. Her compassionate and caring approach made us feel comfortable and confident.
Sr. Christina Olivier provided exceptional nursing care during his stay at the hospital. She was attentive, kind, and always went above and beyond to ensure his comfort and well-being. Her dedication and commitment to her patients while organising the nursing staff was truly remarkable.
Overall, our experience at the Somerset East care and Cure unit was outstanding. Their combined expertise, compassion, and commitment to patient care is commendable. I highly recommend Somerset Care Unit to anyone in need of medical attention.

What a blessing to have such a well run step down facility in Somerset East, with exceptional staff.
We were priviledged to experience excellent care at the Seccu under Dr Janita’s supervision. The carers are well trained and efficient in their duties. We received so much love and compassion from all the staff involved.
In this step down unit, the patient is number one, including their family.
As a family member I received a personal call from sister Christina each day to give me an update. The carers would also tell me everything I needed to know and suggest things I could bring to help with the healing process. Thank you Dr Janita for your care, love and compassion, and your prayers. We thank Jesus for you and the passion he has given you to run the Seccu.
I believe this was a crucial step in my Dad’s healing and rehabilitation and to ease the transition from hospital to home.
From 26 November 2024 to 3 February 2025 my Sister-in-law stayed at SECCU
It was such a reassurance to have left my dear friend in your care. You took such good care of her and with so much love and compassion.
The staff were friendly and prepared to help at all times, even the days when the sadness were too much, they consoled us.
Dr Janita Saayman, a big thank you to you and your team for taking special care of a very special person. Being honest and letting us know what exactly was coming and then putting her and her loved ones at ease for the last part of her journey here on earth! We started off as strangers, but ended up much more.
You spent so much time to do extra and special things to make her life more bearable. Your feedback to the family were very much appreciated and again, honest.
Your dedication and service to the community were so obvious and coming from the heart.
All the best in the continuation of this great project.
Thank you from a grateful friend
Dear Dr. Saayman, Sr. Olivier, and caregivers…..
I would like to sincerely thank you for the exceptional service and care I received in Seccu. After surgery, I spent just short of three weeks in the unit, and the care, dedication, and support I received from the caregivers was excellent. Day or night, nothing was ever too much for anyone, and they went out of their way to make everything as comfortable as possible for me.
A big thank you also to Dr. Saayman, who regularly dropped by to check if everything was in order and if I was satisfied. Nothing is ever too much for her, and one cannot miss her passion for her “brainchild.”
Also to Sr. Christina Olivier, a huge thank you for the wound care every day, including weekends, the extra check-ins, and for handling moments when my emotions threatened to overwhelm me, with such empathy and compassion. Her passion for her work and patients, her positivity, and her friendliness are an asset to the unit and will always stay with me—also the extra mile she went with a Mother’s Day surprise so that my family could spend the day with me.
I will recommend Somerset East Care & Cure Unit to anyone who needs additional medical care. You won’t regret it. I will definitely make use of them again in the future, if needed.
I wish Dr. Saayman and her dedicated team only the best for the future. May you go from strength to strength.
